Below is the version 6 design for the Scotts-dale Division Layout. This track plan is designed to fit in my current basement.
It requires some modifications to the basement, specifically finishing and
adding a door to access the staging and helix area. This is significant less
modifications that the version 5 design required. The entire track plan covers
different types of coal hauling operations from mine to power plant. There are
two major sacrifices in this plan compared to version 5, first there is no
obvious upgrade path to add the port of Norfolk at a later date. Second, the
branch line has been eliminated to provide for additional mainline length.
The big improvement is in mainline length. All through trains operate over
both decks of the layout, which results is a substantially longer run over
previous designs. Also, that addtion mainline length allowed me to extend the
region being modeled. This layout extends from just west of Iaeger, WV whereas
previous design extended to Welch, WV. (See Pocohantas Division Map at NS
Reasearch @ SDD.) Also, this design is much more prototypical than previous
designs. First, all locations, except the power plant and Scotts-dale are based
on the prototype. Second, nearly every turnout on the NS from Iaeger to Elkhorn
Tunnel is captured in this design. Also all of the operating mainline mines (and
some of the closed mines) are replicated.

Things I Like About this Plan:
- Prototypical Mines
- Mostly prototypical track arrangements
- Great mine turn operations
- Long mainline run for through trains
- Rotary Dump Operations at power plant
- Meets most Givens & Druthers
Things I Don't Like About this Plan:
- Helix
- No Port Operations
- Non-prototypical Power Plant
- Double track mainline, while prototypical is more expensive and
not as
operationally interesting.
- Still big - may be too difficult to maintain and/or too expensive to build at
any stage in my life.
