Below is the version 5 design for the Scotts-dale Division Layout. This track plan is designed to fit in my current basement,
although it requires modifications to the existing train room and storage area. It is also designed as a "phased" layout with construction an operations starting
on one deck and the other deck added at a later date The entire track plan covers
different type of coal hauling operations from mine to port and power plant.
The goal of this layout is to provide both mainline and mine turn operations.
The concept of operations is that the yard at Scotts-dale is the principal
marshalling yard. Mine turns are dispatched from Scotts-dale to mines, 3 on the
main line and 6 on the branch line. Mainline operations are primarily moving
empties from the port and power plant to Scotts-dale, then returning with loads
received from the mine turns. Some unit coal trains will be operated as well.
For a little variety, intermodal trains will run to and from the port. Also
occasional freight trains, roadrailers, and even an Amtrak train will run. Operations are centered around coal movements
and could keep four to eight folks busy for a while. There is sufficient
mainline and branch line running to operate both mine turns on the branch and
movements to the port, in addition some unit trains could be run directly. The
yard at Scotts-dale would be a very busy place. A cut-out for Roanoke
Staging has been added in the transition area, which should help the operational
feel of some trains.
The construction
of the layout provides for a three phase approach. Phase I focuses on the mainline operations between
Scotts-dale and Elkhorn Tunnel. Staging would be used to simulate mine turn operations at first. Phase II adds
upper deck and mine turn operations.
Phase III adds the port of Norfolk. The approach allows Phases I and II to be
built and made operation in the currently finished part of the basement, before
starting construction in the unfinished portion. Thus a reasonably large and
operational layout can be built before pouring train money into home
improvements.
The size of the layout might be a challenge, but the phased construction
approach should mitigate part of the challenge. Still, the size allows for
great opportunities for operations, yet the resulting layout is far larger than any previous layout
that I've attempted. It raises concern that the design might be a layout that is
too big, it could be either too expensive to build or too difficult to maintain.
Thus, while I consider this version as my "Ideal" layout, I will likely start
working on a smaller version that captures the same basic operations.

Things I Like About this Plan:
- Great mine turn operations
- Long mainline run for through trains
- Port Operations
- Rotary Dump Operations
- Meets all Givens & Druthers
- Prototypical Industries
- Mostly prototypical track arrangements
- Logical Phases to construction - mesh with basement arrangement
Things I Don't Like About this Plan:
- Helix
- Track Arrangement for container port
- Wider aisles would be nice.
- Double track mainline, while prototypical is more expensive and
not as
operationally interesting.
- Still big - may be too difficult to maintain and/or too expensive to build at
any stage in my life.
