What's New About the SDD
August 15, 2008 - Another Try at a Layout

In July, 18 months after moving, the new Scotts-dale Division layout was started. It took lots of though and numerous compromises to get "now" layout instead of the "dream" layout, still it will be great to have trains running again. Now the bench work is complete and laying roadbed is underway.

For more on the Layout, check out the Track Plan page. If your interested in the process to get to the now layout, check out the Givens & Druthers page. The design iterations for the dream layout are still posted here.

April 27, 2008 - NS Research @ SDD Created

The SDD web site is undergoing significant modifications in the coming months. First, all Norfolk Southern research will be collected in its own site NS Research @ SDD. Content currently found on the clinics and gallery sites will be moved. Second, Galleries @ SDD will not receive additional updates for the foreseeable future as most railfaning efforts have focused on the Norfolk Sothern. Third, Clinics @ SDD has been removed, as the remaining content will be available from other portions of the site or publications. The first example is the publishing of the article "Developing a Prototypical Roster" published in the NMRA MER region newsletter, The Local.

Focusing the web site will allow the limited time available to be spent on adding new content and collecting existing content about modeling modern day Norfolk Southern Operations on the Pocahontas Division, adding to the available knowledge base for all modelers.

It is Fall of 2004 and the Scotts-dale Division (SDD) has recently been formed. The SDD is a short line business unit of the Norfolk Southern Railroad (similar to the NC Unit). The line consists of two branch lines and non adjacent yard. The branch lines takes off from the NS (old Norfolk & Western) Mainline between Welch and Bluefield, WV.  The yard is located in the fictional town of Scotts-dale, giving the division its name.

About the Layout

The SDD is modeled in N Scale (1:160). The layout is an 8' x 9' L shape built on custom bench work. Minimum radius is 15 inches for mainline and 12.5 inches for branch line. Mainline turnouts are #7 while yard and branch line turnouts are #5. Code 55 flex track is used. The details can be found under the Layout section of this site.
